Sweden officially joins NATO

On Thursday, March 7, 2024, Sweden officially joined NATO, marking its entry as the alliance's newest member. The accession process was finalized as Sweden deposited its instrument of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty with the United States government in Washington, DC. This development brings the total number of NATO member countries to 32.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed the significance of the moment, stating, "Today marks a historic milestone. Sweden, after over two centuries of non-alignment, has now assumed its rightful place at NATO's table, gaining an equal voice in shaping the alliance's policies and decisions. With the inclusion of Sweden, Article 5's protective umbrella, the ultimate assurance of Allies' freedom and security, is extended. Sweden, boasting proficient armed forces and a top-tier defense industry, contributes strength to NATO, enhances Sweden's security, and fortifies the overall security of the Alliance. This accession underscores NATO's enduring commitment to an open door policy, affirming the principle that every nation has the autonomy to chart its own course."

On Monday, March 11, 2024, the flag of Sweden will be hoisted alongside those of the other 31 Allies in a ceremonial event at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Simultaneously, this symbolic act will be mirrored at NATO commands situated across Europe and North America.
